This was such a fun and different build we got to create. Our client sells work out clothes and needed a place to have her customers shop and try on clothes. We built a warbdrobe, dressing room with full size back lit mirror, Seating area and register cabinet.

The next morning we wake up to see Nick’s van ha The next morning we wake up to see Nick’s van has broken through the salt and is stuck, too. So now there are 4 vehicles stuck out here. We were especially concerned about the Holcomb’s Revel because it’s heavy, and any vehicle strong enough to tow them out would likely sink into the salt as well, but now these small vehicles are even breaking through. The whole situation felt like a minefield— you never know where the salt is thin or thick until it’s too late! As the guys work on getting the Cruiser out, the kids and I start making pancakes and sausage for everyone outside. There’s no way I could cook inside with the camper leaning hard to the left. Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to LILLIAN, 🥳 talk about one she’ll never forget. While we’re cooking and digging, a truck approaches slowly from the distance. They must’ve seen us from far off and came to check if we needed help. Turns out, they’re from the consulate of a town across the flats, called Kochaki. They explain that their city rescues tourists from the flats, and the best part—it’s completely free! No charge for saving us. They assure us, “The cavalry is coming!” And they weren’t kidding. Soon, 10 volunteers with four trucks roll in, carrying massive wooden boards and boulders to help. They wouldn’t let us lend a hand, so we stayed under our @moonshade awning, watching in awe as these kind-hearted strangers worked their magic. If there’s one thing this trip has shown me, it’s that kindness knows no borders—it’s everywhere. Peter and Kathy are first! With a jack, they would lift the van, slide in boulders, lower it until the rocks sank, and then repeat the process until there was about 3 feet of rocks under each tire. When they moved to the front of the van, they raised it higher than the back—odd, at first—but then it clicked. They were planning to have Peter drive off backward, retracing his path where the salt was more solid. Genius! When the time came, Peter zoomed backwards off the boards and kept driving backwards for miles! Kathy joked that Peter set a new record for Revel in Reverse! 😆 @peterholcombe @holcombe.kathy Continue in comments 👇🏼
We see headlights in the distance! A Land Cruiser We see headlights in the distance! A Land Cruiser is speeding our way, and a wave of relief floods us. Hopefully, we won’t have to spend another night in a leaning truck. The Tundra is in decent shape from all the digging today. The diff is completely clear, and the guys get to work using a different technique. They unload wooden boards, jack us up, and throw salt under the tires—jack up, throw salt, repeat. We’re lifting! In just 90 minutes, we’re on top and ready to go. They attach the strap to the Cruiser and pull us out without breaking through! Hallelujah!! Then they drop the strap, tell Scott to “GO GO GO,” and point him in the direction to drive. If we’d known this, we’d have had GPS set up, but Scott, assuming they’d guide us, starts into the darkness. With no horizon or light, it’s easy to veer off track. We radio him, but he replies, “I just sunk in again.” About half a mile later, he’s stuck again. It takes an hour of digging to retrieve our sunken recovery boards. This salty clay is brutal. We ended up breaking 2 @MaxTrax, 1 @GoTread, and completely lost our 2nd GoTread. They said “Pachamama has taken it and it cannot be saved.” If that is our only sacrifice we’ll take it. Now to Peter and Kathy! They dig from 9 to 11 pm, but the Sprinter won’t budge. The salt isn’t holding the weight, and they can’t lift it. They’ll return at 7 am tomorrow with more rocks and wood. We head toward the distant light to update Scott and the kids. Unbeknownst to us, this area is a minefield. Worse than before. Scott’s not stuck bad, so they try to pull him out, but both Driver front and rear tires sink, and the Cruiser begins to sink too. We rush to untie them, but they can’t recover—the salt breaks and they sink through. After an hour of digging, the guys give up. We have new neighbors for the evening. We offer them blankets and water and wish them goodnight. Another night, another moonrise over the salt flats. Tonight we’re leaning at a sharp angle to the left as we try to find comfortable spots in the cab. Completely exhausted, I fall asleep quickly with the smell of salty mud coming from my hair. We grabbed our shovels again, waiting for our friends to arrive with their 2 winches. As we dug, the kids scanned the horizon with binoculars. Then, two small Sprinter silhouettes appeared against the soft glow of the rising sun. @sharkboyg, @peterholcombe , @holcombe.kathy had arrived! A wave of warmth flooded my chest. Tears blurred my vision—not from sadness, but overwhelming joy. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. They knew the risks and still came without hesitation. Incredible people! They stopped a little way off to test the salt and ensure it was safe. We ran over, covered in salty mud, wishing we weren’t so dirty to give them proper hugs! After quickly coming up with a plan to pull us out, they moved into position. Then, we heard it... crack, crack... and we watched in horror as Peter’s back end sank deeper from sitting too long. Noo! Our worst fear had come true. George stayed afloat as we positioned him to winch Peter out first. But as he started, George slowly broke through the salt. We spread the load with Max Trax, but that didn’t stop him from sinking. After more digging, George finally freed himself with just the trax. We needed him out before we all got stuck, so we yelled, “Go! Go! Get out of here!” He fled to safety. Meanwhile, George raced to the city of Uyuni for help. George is the man! While we dug, he got responses like, “No land cruisers will go that far. It’s too dangerous.” My anxiety grew as our friends were now stuck with us. We dug all day, but the vehicles wouldn’t budge. They mud suctioned them down and wouldn’t release them. Looking back, we think this is where our transmission started failing. It just wouldn’t give us power to overcome the suction. The mud was dense, clay-like, and filled with salt that tore at our skin, leaving blisters. Shoveling it felt like digging up bricks, each scoop sticking to the shovel. Continued in comments:👇🏼
Have you ever been in a situation where you needed Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to be truly saved? This happened for the first time in our lives in Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni is one of the most remote and hostile places in the world- and we got stuck in the far south side of it. After days of exploring all along the flats we drifted off course and begin to see little salt water pools around us. Ohhh nooooo… we instantly get on the coms to tell our friend we need to get out of here! Then we felt it...crack crack…the Tundra was breaking through, our back tires instantly sank. Pushing our sleeves up, shovels in hand, we began to dig, and dig, and dig- for hours. We eventually grab all our recovery gear: @blueridgeoverlandgear, @GoTreads, @Maxtraxhq, @arb4x4. We tried to recover ourselves all day and couldn’t get out of the salty sludge. As the sun began to set we gave up. With no signal, Scott & Nick head out in the horizon to get help. Alone with the kids I began to witness the truck sinking deeper into the salt inch by inch. My heart was pounding. My mind was racing. What is this stuff made of? I then remembered we’re on a LAKE! How deep does this watery mud go? Can we get out of this? Is our trip over? It’s getting cold, my kids are hungry, but I’m TERRIFIED to get into the camper for fear of making it sink deeper. I also have to hide my emotions from my children. I can’t let them see my fear. I need to keep them calm. My hands were shaking and I felt like I was going to throw up. I now truly understand the term “worried sick”. We were all alone out there, and I prayed Scott wouldn’t return until he had help. I’ve never experienced a panic attack, but I have to think it starts out a little like that. The sun was sinking behind the horizon and my heart with it. Continued in comments… 👇🏼
In the heart of the Salar de Uyuni salt flats lies In the heart of the Salar de Uyuni salt flats lies Isla Incahuasi. It’s a lonley island covered in Cacti surrounded by a flat sea of white hexagonal salt tiles that stretch for miles. When near this island you’ll no longer feel alone out here. If you don’t have your own vehicle or prefer to avoid subjecting it to the corrosive salt, numerous tour companies in Uyuni can take you out here. Nearly all of them rely on one trusted vehicle: the Toyota Land Cruiser. Scott and the kids had a blast checking them out, comparing them all and dreaming about which one will be their future vehicle. 🤞🏼 The coral composition around the island is a fascinating reminder that the flats used to be part of a gigantic lake. The stark contrast with the barren salt flats is what makes the abundant plant life on the island all the more fascinating. A closer look at the salt crystals reveals their intricate, geometric patterns, forming smaller and smaller squares as they crystallize. We also visited a salt maze and saw where the blocks were harvested to create not just the maze, but tables, sculptures, and even a spectacular Salt Hotel. Salar de Uyuni— a place we’ve dreamed of drivi Salar de Uyuni— a place we’ve dreamed of driving across for years. Spanning over 4,100 miles (6,600 sq km), it’s the largest salt flat on Earth, sitting at nearly 12,000ft (3,600m) above sea level. The sheer vastness is crazy to wrap your mind around. You can drive for hours, sometimes hundreds of miles, and feel like you’re the only one out there. And there were times when we truly were. The glaring white expanse, the crisp, thin air, the sharp beauty of the unbroken horizon — it all conspires to make this one of the most disorienting places we’ve ever been. (As you’ll soon see in future posts.) 🌅 Sunset is magical.✨ The sky stretches endlessly, with colors deepening as the sun sinks below the mountains. The landscape glows in the reflection, as the white salt crust mirrors the sky’s vibrant hues—transforming the whole flat into a breathtaking canvas of color. ☄️ We were also lucky enough to see The ancient comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, dubbed the “comet of the century”, only travels to our inner solar system once every 80,000 years! We had been setting up for a timelapse of the moonrise when, out of nowhere, we spotted it streaking across the sky. I had heard that some friends in Utah had caught a glimpse of it, but I never imagined we’d see it all the way down in Bolivia. It was a stunning, unexpected surprise — one of those magical moments you’ll never forget.
