The Sacred Valley List: 🔸Salinas de Maras:. In The Sacred Valley List: 🔸Salinas de Maras:. Inca salt mines located in the Sacred Valley. Literally thousands of salt pans on the hillside, some dating back 5 centuries ago. We hear that each family is in charge of a pool. If they let it go unattended they will sell it to another family who will take care of it. 💰20soles/adult & kids 🧂You HAVE to buy their Smoked Salt. It’s delicious and will enhance any crappy meal. 🔹Ollantaytambo is a village in the Sacred Valley of south Peru. It has a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces on a hillside. The village’s old town is an Inca-era grid of cobblestoned streets and adobe buildings. 🔸Pisac, Peru is special because it’s a small town situated in the Sacred Valley, renowned for its impressive Inca ruins perched high on a mountain with breathtaking views, a vibrant local market where you can find unique handicrafts and fresh produce, and a great place to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Peru, particularly on Sundays when the market is most lively. We also tried to go to the ruins here but spent all our cash at the market and didn’t realize we had to pay cash for the passes. All these little ladies in the markets had credit card readers but the government didn’t have one. 😂 🔹Moray: The Incas built Moray as an agricultural laboratory to experiment with growing crops in different environmental conditions. The terraces were constructed with different microclimates, allowing the Incas to test crops like corn, potatoes, and quinoa. They would then know where in the valley it would grow best. Smarties. 🔸 Sacsayhuamon: This was 100 yards from our campground and we never made it there. 🤪 This was due to the fact that you can purchase a ruins pass it gives you access to more sites. The problem is you have to use it within 10 days of purchasing the pass. We didn’t want to drive our truck around with the mounts broken so we waited until the truck was fixed. At this time, we were just ready to go and didn’t make time. We did pass it a lot and you can see a lot from the road. Our friends said it was awesome!😊 Pricing listed in comments below 👇🏼
For the past couple of weeks I was really wanting For the past couple of weeks I was really wanting to slow down and just stay put for a bit. Turns out I got my wish. Waiting for our new flatbed mounts couldn’t have come at a better time. (See last post) Cusco was the perfect place to wait. We found a great campground (Quintalala) above the city where we met so many overlanding friends. But most importantly reunited with our buddy Nick and Gus Gus!! We had a couple of pot lucks where we all gathered together, played games and told stories. We follow so many people on Instagram that we haven’t met yet, but this was a place we got to finally meet so many in person! Our heart is full 🥰 The weather is also perfect here. Warm sunshine in the day and cool nights with no bugs. Lots of nights chatting around the campfire. Lillian & Case have been so excited to go to the Peruvian Markets! We heard Cusco and its surrounding cities had some of the best in South America. It took 2 weeks for our flatbed mounts to arrive so we had plenty of time to walk around and window shop until they found their favorite fluffy alpacas, sweaters, scarfs, blankets, and ponchos! We did leave the campground for 2 nights and rented an airbnb with an OVEN! We spent every minute baking bread, cookies and brownies. Our check out time was 12pm and we pulled the last loaf of bread out at 11:50! 🤣 🥖❤️ Cusco is such a beautiful city. It’s touristy, yes, but it still holds charm with its flower lined cobble stone streets and beautiful bright textiles hanging from every doorway. I loved it! Top 5 city of our trip so far! We were happy to call Cusco home for a month. 😍
We hit our year mark while in Peru! Over the past We hit our year mark while in Peru! Over the past year we really haven’t held back on the roads we have traveled, and have truly put our truck camper to the test traveling over 20,000 so far. From topes, corrugated roads, endless pot holes roads with 1000ft drop offs the truck has held up so well until Peru. These beautiful but horrible roads have created a lot of lateral movement and the flex of the Tundra hit its limit. Right before setting out on the Salkantay Trek Scott noticed we had a failure. 3 (out of 6) of our flatbed mounts had cracked. 2 had completely sheered in half with no connection on the front 2 and 1 middle one was cracking. Yes, these are the mounts that hold the flatbed & camper to the trucks frame! If they were all to break the camper would slide off the back. While on the trek we reached out to @summitexpeditiontrucks to ask for advice on how we should fix this problem being 8000 miles away. Ralf and his team instantly responded with a solution. They went above and beyond! Not only did they ship us down new mounts free of charge, but they also completely redesigned new ones for us. From CAD to cutting, to the welders putting the final pieces together they were able to redesign and ship them in a week. We were thinking we would have to take it more easy on our truck and maybe take better roads in the future because the Tundra does flex so much, but with their redesign they gusseted the shit out of them so we could continue along the bad but beautiful roads we loved so much. We’re still blown away at the customer service. There are going to be failures in every company, but it’s how they respond that really makes a difference. So if you’re looking to set out on an international overloading adventure you can be sure you’re in good hands when it comes to SET. No matter where you are in the WORLD they will take care of you and make it right. On the cover of my geography book was a picture of On the cover of my geography book was a picture of Machu Picchu. It evoked thoughts of Indiana Jones finding and exploring ancient civilizations. I loved looking at the cover and imagined being there often. Seeing it in person was a major milestone for our trip, one I had been looking forward to for 6 years. -Scott The next day we awoke early in anticipation of the day ahead. We had walked so far to get to this point. It didn’t disappoint. Machu Picchu was incredible. Just being up there and walking around amazed us that the Inca people could build such a wonderful place. The site is perched at an altitude of 7200 ft (2400m) and was built on terraced slopes that were incredibly difficult to reach. Each stone structure exhibits such meticulous craftsmanship that the stones seamlessly interlock, leaving no room even for a razor blade to fit through. Our guide had us stop and look through a window and every window lined up with it. Such thought and care went into building this beautiful place. On top of that, some of the temples hold spiritual significance and were built with perfect alignment to coincide with specific solstices and astrological events. Machu Picchu Routes: Route 1: Main Overlook high above to see all the surrounding mountains. Route 2: Lower Main Overlook + you get to walk around inside the ruins Route 3: You get to tour the ruins in the Royal area. We made the mistake of getting our tickets 2.5 months in advance. Even 2.5 months in advance route 2 (the best) was taken. We chose to spend double and book 1 & 3 to see high above and walk through the ruins. I should have waited to get them when we arrived. Turns out all the routes are available for people who show up the day before. That would have taken more time, but we wouldn’t have had a deadline. I really hate deadlines. Tickets: $50/ticket/pp Guide(2hr): $70/4pple Bus Ticket: $12/pp up $12/pp down Train Tickets to Cusco: $70/pp (Inca Rail to Ollantaytambo - Bus to Cusco) No train - you walk 7 miles back to Hidroelectrica and take the Collectivo to Cusco for $12.50/pp (or park your vehicle at Hidroelectrica) #machhupicchu
5/6 Salkantay Trek Day 5 Llactapata to Machu Picc 5/6 Salkantay Trek Day 5 Llactapata to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) Our last day has arrived! Distance – 11 miles (18km) Elevation Loss: -3500ft (760m) Elevation Gain: +1000ft (300m) Starting Elevation: 9200 ft (2680m) Ending Elevation: 6700ft (2050m) We had planned to wake up to the sunrise over the valley looking at Machu Picchu, but the valley was covered in clouds and we couldn’t see anything but white. Truly sleeping in the clouds this morning. We had a hearty breakfast of pancakes, avocado toast, and fresh fruit, again all included in the price of the room. It really has been great not to worry about cooking or even packing and carrying all our food these past 5 days. Every meal has been so delicious. This was a nice luxury of this trek for me. No cooking or cleaning for 5 days. We hit the trail around 8am and headed to the town of Machu Picchu! The first part of the trail you descend off the mountain down 3,400ft in 3.7 miles to Hidroeléctrica. It takes around 2.5hrs. From Hidroeléctrica to Machu Picchu Pueblo is another 7.3 miles. This is the flat part of the hike. You’re hiking in the jungle cloud forest, along a rocky trail next to the train tracks. Over 7 miles you do ascend about 1000ft. This is the same trail used by the American professor Hiram Bingham who rediscovered Machu Picchu after centuries of it being lost to the outside world! There are sand flies at all stops along the Salkantay Trail, especially once you hit Lucmabamba.   Wear long light clothing and bug spray.  These buggers left big bites, that were extremely itchy and lasted weeks! As we got closer and closer to Machu Picchu Pueblo a feeling of happiness and accomplishment invaded us! We did it! We actually did it! 4/6 Salkantay Trek Day 4 Lucmabamba to Llactapata 4/6 Salkantay Trek Day 4 Lucmabamba to Llactapata This was a chill day for us with only 3.7 miles. We did gain 2600ft in elevation in that time, but compared to the last days this wasn’t too bad. We only hiked 4 hours this day. Our legs were very happy we let them rest a bit. Distance: 3.7miles (6km) Elevation Gain: +2600ft (800m) Starting Elevation: 6600ft (2000m) Ending Elevation: 9200ft (2800m) This is where we enter the famous and highly-acclaimed Inca trail! Here we passed an Inca site called Llactapata. We not only saw ruins, but across the valley sat Machu Picchu from this spot with Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain looming over. This was one reason we decided to cut this day short and spend the night here. The Llactapata Lodge is a stunning property that looks at the backside to Machu Picchu. We originally planned to stay in Santa Teresa, but we pivoted the day before. This lodge is the only lodge on this detour over the mountain. On Booking.com Llactapata Lodge is $250/ night(room only)! We found their WhatsApp and messaged them the day before and got it for $90(4pple) including dinner and breakfast! AMAZING score! We skipped Santa Teresa Hot springs because others told us they were packed with people and mosquitos. After arriving at Llactapata and looking at Machu Picchu across the valley, we knew we made the right choice. 🏨 Hostel: Llactapata Lodge 📲 WhatsApp: +51 952 712 467 💰 Price: 90sol/pp ($22.50/pp) (Dinner + Breakfast + Hot Shower + WIFI + View of Machu Picchu) This is where you can choose to make the trail 4 or 5 days.
