The Toco Toucan! A Toucan’s distinctive croak is The Toco Toucan! A Toucan’s distinctive croak is unlike any other bird call, and when one’s nearby, we’re always on alert, listening intently. 2: With our ears wide we heard it in the distance! Running with our cameras while trying not to trip in the river and being feasted on by caiman or pirañas we ran toward the call. 3-4: As you can see, we had to capture this beauty from a distance—apologies for the blurry shots! 5: Have you ever heard their call? If not Swipe to hear so if you ever find yourself in their territory you can spot them as well! — We also took a day and walked through the pampas in search for Anacondas. 6: See this vast area that we’re walking in? This is usually all water. This tour is typically a boat tour through the pampas in search for Anaconda, but we have to walk it. A view of how bad the drought is down here. 7: This time of year they like to hide in trees, so we search in every nook and cranny. 8: We find one all curled up. There are guides in other tour groups that would pull them out and show you them, but our guides respected the animals and let them be. We found 2 anacondas this day, but let them rest. 9: But we had to be careful of these wasps. They nest in the trees and will attack if you get too close! — 10: We stayed in cozy cabins, simple but perfect, each one equipped with bug nets. 11: Lying there, listening to the hum of the jungle. You’re wrapped in the protective embrace of your netted tent, but the wild is right outside, alive and loud. 12: In the mornings, right before the sun would rise the howler monkeys awoke— their deep, guttural calls rising through the canopy, It was both eerie and exhilarating, a sound so raw and primal it felt as though the very jungle was waking up with you. 13-14: One morning we arose out of bed with them and followed their calls to capture them in the trees. —— We also spotted a few more exotic birds these days. 15: A blue and gold Macaw 16-17: Aracari Toucan 18-20: and just a few more of the Toco Toucan standing proud with its massive beak! Ever wonder if the cartoons about piranhas are act Ever wonder if the cartoons about piranhas are actually true? You know, the ones where you drop a beef bone in the water and—bam—a piranha party breaks out, devouring it like they haven’t eaten in a decade? Well, spoiler alert: it’s totally true! We witnessed these little fish go wild. It was like watching a horror movie, but with teeth and fins. Now, they may have been small piranhas, but don’t let their size fool you—our guide said those teeth could slice your finger right off. And guess what? Later that night, we fried them up and had our own little “feast of the piranhas.” Case wasn’t a fan as you could tell ☝🏼😂 Honestly, though, the food here has been outstanding. We haven’t eaten this well since... well, ever. For such a meager place out in the jungle they have been spoiling us with a gorgeous, delicious buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day. As a former caterer, I’m all about those little touches—someone clearly takes pride in their job and we’re reaping the benefits! I can’t recommend Jaja Tours more! Everywhere you look you can’t be disappointed. I Everywhere you look you can’t be disappointed. If there wasn’t a bird there, it was a caiman or capybara! It was crazy… -Case When we visited the Pampas of Bolivia, the region was in the grip of a serious drought. Typically, there’s a three-hour boat ride to reach the cabins, but for the first time ever, we were able to drive in. The low water levels vividly illustrated the struggles this area faces. You could even see the impact in the skies with wildfires raging across South America. The river, usually flooding the ground all the way up to the walkways between the cabins, was dramatically low. This change brought both positives and negatives to our tour. ➕Positives: The low water forced all the caimans to the river, so they were easily visible along the riverbanks. I mean, they were EVERYWHERE! Normally, with high water, you can only see them at night by the reflection of their eyes. We got to see those eyes too. Wanna go swimming? Some people did swim, despite the caimans nearby. The famous pink river dolphins were there as well, looking like aliens! Only a few brave souls took the plunge. We were not among them. Another bonus was the reduced number of mosquitoes. 🙌 ➖Negatives: The severely low water levels meant our boat frequently dragged along the riverbed. Sometimes, we had to get out and walk on the shore—the same shore covered in caimans! While walking, we nearly stepped on a freakin’ fer-de-lance, one of the most venomous snakes in the world! Thankfully he didn’t care we were there. Nick carried Gus Gus on his shoulders for safety. Sometimes Gus stayed behind in the boat, but he kept his eyes on us the whole time. On one of our shore walks, we found a caiman skull. Our guide let us keep its teeth as a souvenir. After our adventure in the Pampas, they finally told us that caimans are not aggressive. It would have been good to know that before we were told to walk along their shores!
Today we head to The Pampas. In Bolivia, the “P Today we head to The Pampas. In Bolivia, the “Pampas” refers to a vast wetland area located on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, characterized by flooded plains, winding rivers, and a rich diversity of wildlife, where you can spot animals like pink river dolphins, caimans, capybaras, and anacondas. And spotted them we did!! 3: We spent our days on wooden boats cruising along the river. 4: Caimans lurked right by our boat as we climbed in, adding a thrill to the adventure. 5: Yacare Caiman are also known as piranha caimans because they eat a lot of piranha fish. Caiman are found primarily in freshwater canals and lakes and rarely exceed 5 feet in length. 6: Black caimans are the largest caiman species, reaching lengths of up to 17 feet and weighing up to 1,000 lbs. Other caiman species are typically around 6 feet long and weigh around 80 lbs. Caimans eat fish, small mammals, and sometimes snakes and capybaras. 7- 8: What the heck is a capybara? They are the largest rodents on earth! They can weigh more than 100 lbs and grow to be 4ft long and 2ft tall. 9-18: Scott is our wildlife photographer. The pampas kept him busy as there was always something to look it. Here are a few more of his captures as we floated down the river these days. Can you name any you see? 19: On our drive in there are warnings of capybaras. Unfortunately, they didn’t help this guy. ——— Along the Pan-American Highway, you have multiple opportunities to visit the Amazon. Ie Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. They all offer similar experiences. We chose Bolivia because it was the most affordable option. 💰Our full 5 day 4 night tour was 1770bob ($168/adults) 1/2 off for kids. Without the exchange rate it’s usually $250/adult. (If you have more than 4 adults you can get it for 1670bob) The price includes entrance to parks, community and canyon. We drove 2 days north of La Paz to get here. There were a mix of paved and gravel roads along the way. Camped in the highest city in the world - El Alto, Camped in the highest city in the world - El Alto, sitting at 13,600ft. Its neighbor, La Paz is the 7th highest at 12,000ft . These 2 cities are separated by a steeeeep slope! However, getting back and forth ain’t so bad. 2: La Paz’s Teleférico cable car system is the longest and highest in the world! The cable cars have reduced commute times from one hour to 10 minutes! They were awesome to use and cheap at only 3bob ($0.28) for each ride. 3-4: Spying into peoples back yards. 5: The architecture is very interesting here. 6: Gotta try 📍Patata Republic fries ($1) Scott also found Ultra sunrise..It’s been a year! 7: The blue dollar rate in Bolivia is great right now. The official exchange is 7 BOB per $1 USD, but with crisp $100 bills, you can get 10.5 BOB on the street. 8: Best rate:📍The Plaza de Obelisco (-16.4987530, -68.1350137) Look for the ladies with umbrellas. 👀 ☂️ 9: So what does all this mean for us? Our money is stretching SO far, and we’re having Ribeye steak dinners for $4 each!🥩✨📍Oliva Restaurant 10-12: Just down the street from Oliva, you’ll find the famous Witch Market (Mercado de las Brujas). One of the more striking sights at the market is the mummified llama fetuses. While these unfortunate stillborns might seem unsettling, they’re considered powerful symbols of good luck. Traditionally, they’re used as offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth) or placed under the foundations of homes to attract prosperity, health, and protect against evil spirits. 13–14: You’ll find markets everywhere. 15: With the exchange rate so great we were on the hunt for Victorianox knives. Yeah....we went a little crazy. 16: While driving through LaPaz be very careful which roads you take. We took a wrong turn and headed up a steep street where even our breaks couldn’t hold us as we were trying to back down. 17- 18: Views of La Paz. 19: They like to build little houses on top of buildings. 20: Poor Gus had to wear a mask on the Teleférico. Lake Titicaca - do you remember laughing at this n Lake Titicaca - do you remember laughing at this name when you were a kid? 1: We crossed into Bolivia at Copacabana around sunset. 2 - 4: Wild camping on the shores of Lake Titicaca. ⛺️GPS spot: -16.17579, -69.09650 5: Before we crossed the border we filled all our gas canisters preparing for the severe fuel shortages we know lies ahead in Bolivia. 6: If you choose to cross the border in Copacabana you then have to take the awesome wooden ferry on your way to LaPaz. 7: As you board the ferry, you can see and hear the barge flex and creak. 8: The entire structure is made from huge, hewn pieces of wood, with a tiny motor pushing us across the channel. 9: Don’t worry it can handle heavy loads. 10: They use large sticks to dock upon the shore. 11: We’ve been reunited with our container buddies Nick and Gus Gus! We’ll be traveling together throughout all Bolivia for a month. So say hello to Uncle Nicky! 12 - 13: The streets of Copacabana. 14. - 15: Bolivian Markets - I am going to miss these one day 16 - 17: The women in Bolivia dress similarly to Peruvians, but their traditional attire features beautifully layered dresses that are incredibly thick at the hip and come in a variety of colors and styles. 18: We drove down a street lined with dress shops, each showcasing these vibrant garments. 19: Crossing from Peru to Bolivia was smooth. We had already secured our expensive $160 visas at the Bolivian Consulate in Cusco, so the process was straightforward. They just had to stamp our passports and issue a 30-day TIP for the vehicle. We had planned to visit Isla del Sol, but the border police advised us to reach La Paz by Monday due to impending local protests and roadblocks that could leave us stranded. Grateful for the warning, we decided to head directly to La Paz. 20: In La Paz, driving laws seem nonexistent; stop signs and red lights are ignored. It’s a matter of inching forward until you can squeeze through the endless number of taxis. We’ve never seen so many Toyota vans in our lives. But at least the streets were wide!
